This is the second book in the Millenium series.
After solving the mystery of Harriet Vanger, Mikael Bloomkvist returned to his job at Millenium. He and his team had picked up a scoop about human trafficking. Freelancer Dag Svesson had come across the scoop, and was planning on bringing the downfall of many important people in the society, one of which was the mysterious "Zala". After Dag goes snooping around, looking to fill his article with more information about the infamous "Zala". But, as he delves further into the mystery, he discovers Zala is not a force to be reckoned with, but still needs to find out more. So, he enlists Bloomkvist to help out, but finds out more than he can handle, and the situation soon gets out of hand.
Meanwhile, Lisbeth Salander, who hacked Bloomkvist's computer and can see everything on his hard drive. She sees the name "Zala" and realizes this is not a job for Mikael, and begins to track down the mythical Zala to save Bloomkvist, and many other people from Zala's power.
